The Noble and Faithful Akita

Third in an indefinite series of posts on dog breeds I like. See previous entries here and here.

There is no way I could watch this recently released direct-to-DVD Lasse Hallstrom movie, which is inspired by the true story of Hachiko. I would pretty much be in tears the entire time thinking about Shmoo, the amazing Akita I spent my childhood with:

  1. Awww just thinking of Schmoo makes me teary eyed

  2. me and my mom are looking for an akita rescue so we can adopt one (after seeing the movie Hackto!) were hoping to adopt

  3. I’d be cautious about jumping into adopting an Akita – they’re not for everyone and not for first-dog owners. You should definitely orient yourself with the breed before adopting and learn about the unique challenges of the breed – their strength, their protectiveness (my Akita Shmoo famously grabbed my mother’s hand in his teeth and pulled her away when I started crying as she was changing me as a baby). Talk to breeders, read books about the breed before you buy, and be sure that the dog you adopt is one you can handle — my parents bit off a little more than they could chew with a few of our Akitas.
